The human genome comprises ~ 30,000 ~ – 20,000 genes consisting of several regions, exons (protein coding regions) representing ~2-1%, and introns (non protein coding regions) and promoter regions representing ~ 99 -98% of the entire human genome.
Large scale genomic analysis can be achieved via two powerful approaches, whole exome sequencing (WES) and whole genome sequencing. WES can analyze exons, while WGS can analyze exons, introns, and promoter regions.
